Good Tía
I take away their screens.
Let’s go on an adventure!
Niece walks alongside me.
We yell: Bostyn! Where are you? Let’s go on an adventure!
No answer. Must be somewhere else.
Oh well, we can still explore.
Up the hill, through the gate.
I put her on my back because she is so small
and the grass is so tall.
She clings to my neck and softly says I love you.
Walk toward the lookout.
Sitting on the swing we talk about
Unicorns, Candy Castles, Butterfly Friends…
I turn and look at her smile.
We continue to swing slowly.
Out in the pasture, her brother is in the truck with my mom and dad.
They drive over through the green grass
blue sky, white clouds, yellow sunshine.
He is curious about what we are doing.
We’re going on an adventure!
Off to the screened in cabin I built for camping in nature.
They get on the bed.
I tell them to jump!
They jump! And laugh!
I say let’s go climb my favorite tree!
Everly gets on my back.
Bostyn walks beside us.
We get to the tree and wander around its long low hanging branches.
They scramble around, climb as much as they can.
He gets a little too high up and can’t come down.
Get on my shoulders and I’ll carry you.
We giggle and laugh because we are happy to be together.
Back at the cabin, the jumping resumes!
We imagine how fun it would be to have a table and crayons and paper and pencils out here in our clubhouse.
No screens other than the mesh one surround the frame of this palace.
I built it before they were born.
I didn’t know I was building it for them.
I leave in two days.
This was a perfect Sunday.
